Active Hope: How to Face the Mess we’re in Without Going Crazy by Joanna R Macy and Chris Johnstone
Climate change and other problems faced by the world need to be addressed urgently, yet our most common responses – either panic, or trying not to think about it – are unhelpful. This book gives practical advice about how to grow connectedness with the Earth, each other and our own emotions in order to stay grounded whilst making a difference. Honouring our pain for the world as a starting point for a heroic journey rather than a reason to give up; seeing our selves as expressions of the wider networks to which we belong and our individual efforts as part of a greater power; taking a larger view of time; holding onto our visions; getting support and maintaining enthusiasm are all methods richly explained.
For me, reading this book generated a sense of hope for the future as well as gratitude for the beautiful world we have inherited.
